Computational thinking is an essential competence that is needed in the current and future world. Practical examples of how to learn computational thinking include for example learning programming or learning design thinking. Many schools around the world already teach children programming but teaching design thinking is not very common yet. University of Oulu (UOULU) and Indian Institute of Technology Delhi (IIT-Delhi) have collaborated for several years to develop methods for teaching design thinking to schoolchildren both in India and in Finland. In the Design Thinking Curriculum (DTC) project UOULU and IIT-Delhi will co-create digital, physical, online and face-to-face learning/teaching content for a design thinking curriculum for the Indian Certificate of Secondary Education (ICSE) schools in India as detailed in the Indian National Education Policy framework 2020 (NEP 2020), which IIT-Delhi is responsible for developing. Project activities include creation of co-curated material development like course content, workbooks for students, and teacher guidelines; development of a DIY learning kit for children; a 5 ECTS study module for BSc students on how to teach design thinking; conducting jointly research seminars and supporting conference workshops and activities; and conducting a seminar in Finland and India for expanding the exchange of ideas. The final design thinking module will reach students in over 2750 schools in India and the study module will be available internationally.
